In Transition: The Temporary Office

A scene that makes you appreciate a good set of shelves.

I’m sitting in a makeshift office on the 4th floor of 100 Lafayette Street. My sheets, cupping sets, boxes of needles — and even a fur coat my sister lent me for a whimsical acupuncture pop-up at a festival in California — are scattered across the floor.

Richard, the building manager (world’s cutest, even when he’s scolding me), has been kind enough to let me borrow this temporary suite while Little Fox, my new wellness center, is under construction one floor below. The renovation was supposed to take four weeks… we’re now in week eleven.

Last Saturday, at a friend’s birthday party in Brooklyn, I found myself talking about this blog. I know it’s “supposed” to be utilized for SEO, but when I drafted the list of articles I’d need to write (things like “Acupuncture to bring on period?”) I could feel my brain yawning.

So I cornered two people I trust: the arts center founder (a longtime patient) and a successful artist there (who finally promised he’d come in for a session). Both have used newsletters to build their communities. I asked: what advice do you have to make blogging suck less?

The director said: Humor. Show us your world.

The artist said: Vulnerability. Honesty.

So here’s a behind-the-scenes look into the world of Little Fox, mess and all.

For now, we’re scheduled to have the sink and toilet installed tomorrow. Today, I’ll be putting up the frosted privacy vinyls on the treatment room doors. After that, I’ll finally get to fully move back in. But since I’ve been promised “we’ll be done soon” seven weeks in a row, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Until then, it’s a delicate balance: managing the chaos of a renovation downstairs while keeping the temporary space calm and serene for treatments upstairs. I hope the construction project drama will recede rapidly in the rear view mirror, and not become the subject of another blog post.

In the meantime, yeah — it’s messy!

If you’d like to follow the behind-the-scenes journey, you can…
